Collaborative Video
The video showcases three elements. A new composition by Tom Spach is based on components of flamenco music. Clips of dance by Julie Galle show the energy of live performance and a fusion with the score for Butterfly. Rehearsal in 2020 demonstrates how writer/director Sandra Hughes juxtaposes spoken word, dance, and music.

Butterfly - Draft Narrative Outline
A draft of the narrative outline by Sandra Hughes is a dramatic guide to intertwine dance, music, and spoken lines in Butterfly, which is an exploration of the artistic development in the life of Lorca, a gifted child who emerges as an adult artist and astounds the world.

Artist Work Descriptions
Sandra Hughes (Writer / Director)
This is an exploration of the artistic development in the life of a gifted child who emerges as an adult artist and astounds the world. The private very personal drama of the gifted child often remains unnoticed and its special needs go unmet. In many cases art becomes a refuge, an ongoing survival mechanism that becomes indistinguishable from everyday reality.
Julie Baggenstoss (Choreographer / Performer)
Flamenco dance amplifies the emotional expression of its accompanying music, by way of hell-raising contrasted with control of motion. This is evident in samples of live performances. Lorca was swept away by the interplay between movement and melody, where everyone in the presence of flamenco arrives with the expectation that anything is possible at any moment. It creates an electricity in tablao performances, and that same energy elicits passionate reaction when fused with genres, such as hip-hop, spoken word, opera, and theater.
Tom Spach (Composer)
I am currently developing a collection of musical themes that will be developed into the expanded score for the dance, music, drama production, Butterfly.   The 12/8 meter - so fundamental to much of flamenco music - is utilized throughout to meld the various themes into a cohesive whole.  I seek  -  as Lorca did -  meter and musicality  to connect myself and audiences  to the profound, yet elusive and undefinable experience called "Duende" - sometimes known as "passion", "soul", "intensity" and/or "transcendent emotion".
